What is Reflux Disease?
Reflux is the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. Normally, the sphincter consisting of muscles in the lowest part of the esophagus acts as a valve, preventing the stomach contents from returning to the esophagus. If the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens on its own or does not close properly, stomach contents begin to rise to the esophagus and reflux occurs. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux, which is common. Reflux is also called acid reflux because gastric juice is acidic.
